The Biosciences Group at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) is hiring 2–3 student temporary Research Assistants to support research on human tolerance to impact and injury, with the goal of reducing injuries from motor vehicle crashes. The projects focus on characterizing the mechanical properties of the ribs and sternum to inform and improve human body computer models. Students will assist with material and mechanical property research, primarily fabricating tension coupons from human cortical bone by removing soft tissue and cutting, milling, and sanding samples to precise geometry and uniform thickness; they may also support mechanical testing and data collection. This is a full-time (40 hours) onsite position for the spring/summer terms, with the possibility of extension into the fall, depending on funding, performance, and availability; at that time, the hours would be reduced to accommodate a full-time academic load. This position will tentatively begin on June 1st. Pay is commensurate with experience. |
