Job Description

The student will participate in general lab maintenance: shelving washed glassware, preparing solutions, restocking lab supplies, and autoclaving/sterilizing lab equipment. Once skills and ability to follow directions are demonstrated, the student will have the opportunity to learn advanced techniques such as PCR genotyping, gel electrophoresis, and DNA purification.

The lab studies the role of membrane traffic in cellular functions which are important for cancer, normal neurological functions, and diabetes.

Educational Value

Gain experience working in a laboratory environment and learn skills necessary for work as a technician in an academic, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology lab.

Students who display responsibility with lab support tasks and desire to do research will have the opportunity to perform independent research in the lab, guided by scientists.

Past trainees have been authors of scientific publications from the lab, participated in undergraduate research for credit, and obtained experience necessary for admission into graduate school in the fields of biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology, admission into medical school, and employment as technicians in the field.

Many of our top graduates were first-generation students, from groups underrepresented in the sciences, or veterans. We encourage applications from students from these groups.

Job Requirements

Ability to commit to 3-4 hour blocks of time on a routine basis throughout the semester. Good communication skills and the ability to work with others and take directions are essential. Experience is not necessary. Second-year students are preferred.
