Job Summary

College Application Advisor

This is a part-time temporary position.

The University of Michigan Wolverine Pathways (WP) is a supplementary education program established to increase the high school graduation rate and college acceptance and retention rates of academically promising scholars residing within the public school boundaries of Detroit, South?eld, and Ypsilanti. All instructors employed with Wolverine Pathways will demonstrate exemplary service and expertise in their given subject area.

The position requires advisers to provide quality virtual college advising for highly motivated 12th-grade high school students. The focus of the advising and instruction will be on the requirements, deadlines, and expectations for students’ college applications, including applications to the University of
Michigan-Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

In this position, college application advisers will be required to attend one workshop during the WP Senior Overnight event between June 15-17, 2026.

Responsibilities

Speci?c responsibilities include providing the following via remote advising to a group of up to 32 scholars in the 12th grade:
  • Meeting with scholars bi-weekly through 30-minutes o?ce hours appointments
  • Advising and coaching scholars on their college applications and their required items and deadlines
  • Monitoring, documenting, and assessing scholars’ progress on the completion of their college application items
  • Provide weekly updates on student progress to WP leadership
  • Hold weekly standing o?ce hours for drop-in meetings with WP scholars
  • Supporting scholars in their successful completion and submission of their application to the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor through the Nov. 1 Early Action deadline
  • Facilitating student college preparation through direct feedback and online consultation with individual students on all application matters including essay writing, FAFSA completion, and the scholarship search.

Educational Value

College application advisors' education will be supported through learning acquired from one on one student interactions, facilitating the college application process and guiding scholars through their college list decision process. College application advisors are afforded the opportunity to facilitate problem solving, team work, communication skills and time management skills alongside underserved youth.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, English Language Arts or related specialization
  • Background or experience with diverse populations
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • At least 2 years of experience providing college or academic advising
  • Desire to be an advocate for the development of students
  • Demonstrated dynamism and creativity in implementing lessons
  • Demonstrated competencies to include: displaying tact and courtesy; maintaining con?dentiality; setting priorities; being attentive to detail; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; managing time effectively; working effectively one-on-one and in group or team settings
  • Able to attend pre-session training/professional development sessions
  • Knowledge of the college application process and selective colleges and universities

Desired Qualifications

  • Certi?cation in relevant specialization or grade level
  • Rated “highly effective” on school evaluations or otherwise evaluated as highly effective in an alternative educational setting.
  • Experience delivering distance/remote instruction and/or evidence of skills, knowledge, or experience pertinent to delivering effective distance/remote instruction
  • Experience tracking and working with large data sets
  • Experience working with Google Suite tools, speci?cally Google Sheets (or Microsoft Excel)
  • Experience working with the Common Application or Coalition for College online application tools
