Job Description

As home to the largest and most prestigious collection of ancient manuscripts in the Americas, the Papyrology Collection is committed to preserving and making accessible its holdings to an ever larger public.

We are seeking the assistance of a graduate student with a cataloging project in summer 2026. This will mainly involve inventorying, measuring, and describing papyrus fragments that recently received conservation treatment.

Other tasks may involve assisting undergraduate students in the shelf reading/inventorying of books in the papyrology reference collection, shelf reading/inventorying of papyrus frames in the Papyrology vault, sorting and describing of archival materials documenting the history of the collection, and more.

Educational Value

The students will receive training in the handling, description, and housing of papyrus fragments from the collection. They will also learn how to make additions and changes to the Collection’s database, APIS. Working closely with the curator on unpublished papyri and archival documents, interested students will be able to gain initial, hands-on experience in papyrology and learn more about the history of U-M’s papyrus collection.
