Job Summary:
We are looking for an assistant to conduct archival work and to more broadly help prepare materials and ideas for the celebration of the School of Information's centennial, including what will likely be some sort of exhibition. You would be supervised by the Strategic Advisor to the Dean and work closely with the UMSI Centennial Working Group and a group of UMSI doctoral students. This is a unique opportunity that includes hands-on work with archival materials, with the goal of bringing them to life for the U-M community and beyond.

Responsibilities:

  • Performing archival work with the School of Information's materials held at the Bentley Library, including (but not limited to) scanning, taking notes and pictures, and cataloging items
  • Editing and assisting with the creation of vignettes, articles, or other educational and fun items, especially based on findings from the UMSI archives in the Bentley Library
  • Collaborating on the creation of celebratory materials, including a potential digital exhibit, for the UMSI Centennial
Educational Value
  • Students will gain significant experience in working with archives and archival materials, documenting rarely seen artifacts, and digitizing materials for future reference and commemoration.
  • Students will have meaningful opportunities to creatively tell stories, reflect on history, and imagine possible futures in a variety of ways, based on close work and analysis of archival materials.
  • Students will collaborate closely with education professionals and doctoral students to sharpen skills aligned with professional communication, project management, creative thinking and writing, and possibly graphic design

 

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Experience in a role that required detailed work and problem-solving
  • Frequent and clear communication with collaborators
  • Allocation of 15 - 20 hours a week, possibly more, for archival work at the Bentley Library
  • Ability to work regularly with collaborators during UMSI business hours

Desired qualifications

  • Specific skills and experience with libraries, archives, and knowledge environments
  • Graphic design skills (any software)
  • Storytelling skills and experiencE
Hourly Rate $18.00/hour to $20.00/hour
Hours 15.0 to 20.0 hours per week
