Job Description

Position: Native Plant and Cut Flower Intern

Description: This position will work in a team with the University of Michigan’s Grounds Services Natural Areas Specialist to maintain native plants around the University of Michigan landscape, to promote pollinator diversity, beneficial insects, and beautify the campus. The intern will be an integral part of the Grounds Services team in maintaining the landscape and managing invasive species.  They will also coordinate with the Michigan Sustainability Community staff in maintaining the Cut Flower Farm at Oxford Houses.

Additional Details:

  • In-person, up to 40 hours per week May-August

  • Compensation- $17.00/hour

  • This position may require a valid driver's license and a motor vehicle record check in order to operate University vehicles

 

Educational Value

Students will get experience in the following areas:

  • Native garden, prairie, basin maintenance

    • Cutbacks, weeding, trimming, raking  

  • Invasive management 

    • Includes mechanical and chemical methods 

  • Planting

    • Hand digging and use of hand drill with auger bit

    • Following design drawings 

  • Mulching

  • Greenhouse/ seedling propagation care 

  • Cut Flower Farm maintenance and installation

    • Planting, pruning, and cutting flowers 

    • Hose watering and maintaining the drip irrigation system

    • Weeding

    • Soil maintenance, including compost application

  • Support Bee Campus USA efforts

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be able to position self to perform a wide range of physical activities including pushing, lifting, pulling, kneeling, and reaching, including around obstacles

  • Must have a flexible schedule with weekend availability

  • Willingness and desire to work outdoors every day in all weather conditions

  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks

  • Strong work ethic

 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Plant identifications skills

  • Coursework and experience in horticulture, botany, ecology, soil ecology, and related subjects are helpful.

Hourly Rate $17.00/hour
Hours 29.0 hours per week
