Job Description

The Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) serves as the principal resource for faculty, staff, and students who seek to engage with schools on issues of higher education access and success toward developing a diverse community of scholars at the University of Michigan. CEO seeks energetic and knowledgeable candidates to offer support and educational services to rising 12th-grade students as part of its GEAR UP program. GEAR UP summer staff will provide support for overnight campus visits, educational programs, training resources, and assistance through workshops, information sessions, and distribution of materials. Additionally, the GEAR UP Staff will collect data and conduct surveys as needed.

Educational Value

The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) initiative, housed in the Center for Educational Outreach, is one of the largest and most effective early intervention programs focused on increasing the college and career readiness of low-income students in communities nationwide. GEAR UP is a highly competitive grant program that helps empower local partnerships comprised of K-12 schools, institutions of higher education, state agencies, and community organizations to achieve three strategic goals: (1) increasing the postsecondary expectations and readiness of students; (2) improving high school graduation and postsecondary enrollment rates; and (3) raising the knowledge of postsecondary options, preparation, and financing among students and families. 

Job Requirements

  • Prior experience in educational outreach is a plus
  • Involvement in clubs and community organizations

  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn 

Required Qualifications 

  • Respect for diversity and a willingness to learn about other cultures
  • The ability to work in a team setting 
  • Sensitivity to multicultural needs and characteristics of, and commitment to, helping disadvantaged students
  • Strong interpersonal/organizational skills, excellent written/verbal communication skills, and detail-oriented
  • Must have reliable transportation 
  • Available to work periodic evening or weekend hours as necessary
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in and commitment to the educational goals of CEO
  • Competency with computers and their applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the Internet. 
  • Demonstrated experience in creating and maintaining databases and entering data. 
Hourly Rate $22.00/hour
Hours 10.0 to 29.0 hours per week
