UMSI Brand Ambassador

Video Assignment:

Create a short-form vertical video (Reels/TikTok style) that demonstrates the kind of content you would produce as a UMSI brand ambassador. Your audience is a prospective student exploring one of UMSI’s degree programs.

The video topic is up to you, and creativity is encouraged. Here are some examples of approaches you might take:

  • “The top three reasons you should choose UMSI”
  • A myth-busting video about studying information science/data analysis/user experience design 
  • A narrative video introducing yourself and your journey to UMSI
  • Take a current social media trend and adapt it to highlight something unique about the UMSI experience

We recommend using the free version of CapCut, a video editing platform that allows you to record voiceovers and add music and captions all in one place. 

Requirements for video:

  1. 60 seconds or less
  2. Vertical format
  3. Include captions
  4. Include background music that is permitted for commercial use (you can find this in the commercial library on CapCut)
  5. You must speak and appear on camera for at least some portion of the video
  6. Incorporate visual variety (multiple shots, settings, or scenes; on-campus filming is not required). Here are some visual assets you may use in your video.


Job Summary:

Your role is to pitch and produce vertical videos that capture the UMSI student experience and enhance the visibility of the UMSI brand across multiple platforms. Reporting to the Marketing & Communications team, you will contribute to the school's social media strategy while bringing your own creativity and perspective to the work we do. Your work — totaling 5-10 hours per week — will include independent projects, collaboration with fellow brand ambassadors, on-camera appearances, and conducting interviews with students, faculty, and staff in the UMSI community.

You will work a hybrid schedule, 5-10 hours per week. In-person and remote work can vary week-to-week and is dependent on the projects that you are assigned to.

UMSI is located at 2200 Hayward St., Ann Arbor, MI 48109, but in-person work will be done at multiple locations on the Ann Arbor campuses (Central and North).

Responsibilities:

  • Create and develop social media content in partnership with UMSI's Marketing &
  • Communications team, including pitching ideas, writing scripts, and tailoring content for platforms such as Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and YouTube Shorts.
  • Plan and conduct interviews with UMSI students, faculty, and staff — both scheduled and organic — appearing on camera and helping showcase the UMSI community.
  • Capture and edit multimedia content, including B-roll, photos, and videos, using your personal smartphone. We will provide clip-on microphones and tripods. 
  • Attend and cover UMSI and campus events, gathering content that highlights student life and experiences.
  • Join biweekly team meetings to brainstorm projects and share updates.
  • Communicate regularly with your supervisor and fellow brand ambassadors through Slack. 
Educational Value

You will build skills in video recording and editing, interviewing, photography, project planning, digital accessibility, and maintaining brand guidelines. You will learn best practices for different social media platforms and build a portfolio of brand-based social media work.

 

Job Requirements
  • Must be a current or incoming undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI).
  • Must be able to attend in-person team meetings and UMSI events on the UM-Ann Arbor campuses.
  • 1+ years of experience in social media content planning and creation.
  • 1+ years of experience with recording and basic video editing on mobile devices.
