Job Summary The Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI) is seeking a student program assistant for the M-STEP Program. The M-STEP Program supports in-state, academically and/or economically eligible first-year students. The program assistant position provides key support to the M-STEP Program Director and serves as a resource for current and prospective students. Weekly hours may vary and are typically around 5-7 hours per week. Some hours can be worked virtually, but some in-person work will be required for in-person events, workshops, or event/activity preparation time. This position is contingent upon the availability of grant funding. Typical Duties Include: - Assisting with planning and hosting in-person and virtual events for current students, including monthly dinners and lunches, workshops, virtual information sessions, and more. Hosting includes networking with attendees and ensuring that students feel welcome and included at each event.
- With supervision from the Program Director, writing and producing instruction materials for social events or workshops, flyers, programs, and designing workshop posters.
- With supervision and collaboration from the Program Director, provide students with information, resources, and appropriate guidance to achieve academic, social, and emotional success at U-M.
- Creating a climate of belongingness for MSTEP students at U-M.
- Communicating effectively with the Program Director through in-person, online, and email interactions.
- Performing administrative tasks, including emailing MSTEP participants (e.g., hosting event emails), collating material for distribution, attending meetings, and other special projects.
- Within the guidelines of KCP and under the supervision of the Program Director, working collaboratively with other OAMI program student staff and program participants to accommodate the needs of a diverse community of scholars and to provide valuable perspectives for successful navigation of the U-M campus.
- Performing duties as assigned in a timely and efficient manner.
- Attendance at OAMI student staff training and professional development workshops, unless there is a conflict with the program assistant's academic schedule (e.g., meetings with their instructors, class group meeting)

Educational Value |
This position provides students with a variety of skills while teaching time management and preparing students for professional roles after graduation. Students will learn about diverse populations at the University of Michigan (U-M), how to coordinate in-person and virtual events, mentoring, writing, and interpersonal skills. |

Required Qualifications: - Will be an enrolled undergraduate student during the 2026-27 school year
- An understanding of the unique challenges 1st year students may experience at U-M
- Knowledge about U-M campus, resources, and opportunities
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to relate well to staff and a diverse student body. Can engage in conversation and build rapport with students and connections, both online and in person.

- Reliable with a strong work ethic
- Ability to work autonomously and take initiative on various projects
- Contribute to a diverse environment of colleagues and students representing diverse populations (e.g. nationality, race, ethnicity, religion, gender and sexual orientation, abilities, class, and other social identities). Demonstrates an appreciation of, and sensitivity to, cultural differences
- Familiarity with computers and software, including Microsoft Office, creating basic excel spreadsheets and Zoom functions, and the ability to effectively integrate technology into service delivery. Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and Mailchimp is desirable but not required.
- Able to lift up to 20 lbs.
Desired Qualifications: - Second – third year student, preferably with work-study
- Experience in creating unique and contemporary flyers and other documents
- Experience with creative ideas concerning capacity building workshop design and materials, flyers, and PowerPoint presentations.
