Job Description

Zero Waste Event Captain

The Office of Campus Sustainability and Innovation (OCSI) serves as a focal point for sustainable campus operations. We are part of Planet Blue, a university-wide initiative to promote sustainable operations and engagement. You can learn more about our efforts at ocsi.umich.edu. In this role you will primarily support the Zero Waste Events Program by serving as a Zero Waste Event Captain at events, overseeing zero waste strategies and outcomes. Weekly hours and schedule will vary depending on event staffing requests and your availability. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Making sure proper compost & recycling receptacles are set-up for the event.
  • Placing appropriate temporary signage up at events
  • “Bin Watch” during the event to let guests know what bin to place their waste items in a friendly manner
  • Help make sure diverted items make their way to the proper carts/dumpsters after the event
  • Weight diverted waste and generate diversion reports as requested
  • Assist with additional waste reduction efforts

Job Requirements
  • Ability to communicate and work with a diverse range of people of various social, cultural, economic, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and recording observations
  • Flexible evening and weekend availability required to work at zero waste events.
  • Preferred but not required:
    • Knowledge of sustainability, zero waste principles, and U-M sustainability goals and initiatives
    • Ability to obtain MVR approval and drive university vehicle
    • Availability includes working large zero waste events on:
      • Sunday, August 30th (Convocation Picnic)
      • Graduation week (winter semester)

Hourly Rate $17.00/hour to $19.00/hour
Hours 4.0 to 6.0 hours per week
