Job Description

UMMA is seeking a team of Exhibition Interpreters to assist with the Black Wall Street Journey: Re and De Imagining Black Progress. The Exhibition Interpreters (EI) will support the day-to-day exhibition, interpretation, and visitor service operations of Black Wall Street Journey: Re and De Imagining Black Progress. The Exhibition Interpreters will have a strong understanding of the exhibition content and programs grounded in UMMA museum education practices.

 

With a team of Exhibition Interpreters, you will deliver interactive visitor-centered experiences and answer visitor questions about the project. You will welcome visitors, encourage participation, and create a dialogue-centered museum experience. 

 

This role requires staff who understand the value of art as a vehicle for dialogue; who have some experience in customer service, education, or other settings that requires interacting with a diverse array of people; who work well both independently and as part of a team; and who demonstrate flexibility, creativity, dependability, patience, and punctuality. A key characteristic is a willingness to reflect on your practice and impact.

 

Training

Training and touring take place in person. Training will be the week of September 14th, with shifts starting September 26th, 2026.

 

Schedule & Location: This is a temporary position. Candidates must be available Saturday - Sunday, September 26th, 2026 - January 24th, 2024.

Team members will work approximately 5-10 hours per week, depending on availability.

 
Educational Value

Candidates will be able to work closely with UMMA Educators and the artist, learn from these individuals' areas of focus, and discover new connections between those areas of focus and art and creativity. In addition, this person will be part of a cross-departmental team of Museum professionals allowing them to gain experience with many facets of museum operations.

Job Requirements

Responsibilities Include:

  • Engage with visitors by answering questions, sharing activities, and educational content related to the exhibit and overall related concepts.

  • Welcome visitors, encourage participation, and encourage the use of research stations in the exhibition, and any broader themes it explores.

  • Provide short tours of the exhibition

  • Record visitor responses and comments throughout the exhibition.

  • Opportunities to develop visitor reflection activities

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Applicants who thrive will describe themselves as curious and adventurous and who are comfortable with public speaking. 

  • Experience with museums and art is beneficial but not required.

  • Passion for art, community organizing, education, and civic engagement.

  • Passion for creating a sense of community and belonging.

  • Willingness to reflect on your practice and impact.

  • Value art as a vehicle for dialogue
