Department Summary The University of Michigan (UM) University Health and Counseling (UHC) (formerly University Health Service), a unit of Student Life, is an ambulatory, multispecialty health clinic that serves a diverse student body of more than 50,000 students, as well as UM faculty and staff. UHC provides clinical services throughout its primary care and numerous specialty clinics, as well as health and wellness education and promotion. As a college health center, UHC has unique and heavy reporting needs related to communicable diseases, especially respiratory, gastrointestinal and sexually transmitted infections. These needs escalate in the context of infectious disease outbreaks; recent examples include COVID-19, influenza A, adenovirus, mumps, norovirus, and cyclosporiasis. UHC works closely with the Applied Public Health team to report diseases and monitor outbreaks. Job Summary UHC is seeking to hire a temporary, part-time student to assist with infection prevention activities, including data collection, notifiable disease reporting, and infection prevention-related projects. Shifts range from 2-8 hours in duration, with some weekend and evening hours required. The anticipated start date is August 24th, 2026. Responsibilities Extract data related to notifiable diseases from the UHC electronic health record (Epic) and enter into the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS) Perform in-depth medical record reviews during outbreaks for response, reporting and monitoring purposes Assist in the preparation of communicable disease and infection prevention data, periodic and ad hoc reports, and presentations Assist in disease surveillance, quality improvement, and other health and wellness research projects Assist in the development and preparation of analytical tools and dashboards for tracking and measuring health outcomes Alert leadership of disease trends identified during reporting, including cases of public health concern Other duties as assigned
