GRADUATE MANUSCRIPTS DIVISION STUDENT ASSISTANT 

at the WILLIAM L. CLEMENTS LIBRARY

The William L. Clements Library is a University of Michigan library that houses original resources for the study of American history and culture from the fifteenth through the nineteenth century. Its mission is to collect and preserve primary source materials, to make them available for research, and to create an environment that supports and encourages scholarly investigation of our nation's past.

Students and temporary staff, under the supervision of Clements’ regular staff and faculty, will gain familiarity with a rare book library, learn the basics of processing manuscript material, and learn how to handle rare materials safely. They will also gain experience in primary source instruction and pedagogy relating to historical research materials.

The student will gain familiarity with a special collections library, learn the basics of processing special collections material, and learn how to handle rare materials safely.

 
Job Requirements

The Manuscripts Division Student Position at the William L. Clements Library assists with tasks related to current projects and initiatives.

  • Arrange, folder, and describe historical manuscripts and archival collections

  • Create inventories and lists

  • Assist with research and writing

  • Engage in other related tasks as needed 

Appointment Requirements

  • Graduate, active U-M students, currently enrolled

  • Hours are dependent on the needs of the Clements Library and are directed by the supervisor 

  • All appointment hours across campus positions are recommended to not exceed 29 hours per week for enrolled students

Hourly Rate $18.00/hour
Hours 8.0 to 10.0 hours per week
