Job Description
This is a temporary, part-time position for the 2026-27 academic year, ideal for U-M students with an interest in graphics design and/or media production. The Detroit Center Media Student Assistant will report to the Associate Director within the UM Detroit Center (UMDC) team and will collaborate on a variety of marketing and/or media projects.. Responsibilities may include: 
  • Conceive and create graphics and multimedia for specific events
  • Assist Detroit Center staff in creating social media graphics/campaigns
  • Create and maintain promotional campaigns designed to promote the Detroit Center, its facilities, and events
  • Assist with the capture and creation of U-M engagement videos in Detroit 
  • Edit video and sound for events and podcasts

Hours

This position is part-time to accommodate a student's academic schedule. The position will be up to 20 hours per week, with some flexibility.

Hourly Rate 

Graduate Students: $18.00/hr 
Undergraduate students: $15.00/hr 

Time Frame 

August - May, with flexible start and end dates. Supervision by the UMDC Associate Director, collaborating with the entire Detroit Center team.

The UM Detroit Center, under the Office of the Provost, supports research, outreach, and engagement efforts that foster deep connections with Detroit’s communities. The center also provides meeting, coworking, and event space for a growing number of University programs that collaborate with local organizations and residents. 

As a Detroit Center Media Student Assistant, you will gain real-world experience in media management, information and promotional video/print media creation and distribution, and operational graphics and video production for a university event and meeting facility. This position offers opportunities to build on skills such as project management, team collaboration, and portfolio management, which can add value to a professional resume.

 

Job Requirements
  • Interest in graphic design, media production, marketing, or digital communications.
  • Experience creating graphics and/or multimedia content using industry-standard design or editing software.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and creating engaging digital content for promotional campaigns.
  • Video production experience, including filming, video editing, and audio editing for events, podcasts, or promotional content.
  • Strong creativity, attention to detail, and ability to communicate visually through digital media.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a team-oriented environment.
  • Self-motivation, reliability, and willingness to take initiative. 
Hourly Rate $15.00/hour to $18.00/hour
Hours 20.0 hours per week
