Job Description

The Residential College (RC) in LSA seeks a motivated graduate student intern to serve as a Student Services Assistant II in the Academic Services Office during the 2026-2027 academic year. The intern will report to professional Academic Services staff and will be an integral member of a student-centered team committed to student development and academic success.

The student services assistant provides advising support to current students in areas including degree requirements, departmental and college policy, course selection, and general curricular navigation. The assistant will also process declarations, exceptions, permissions, and course overrides under the supervision of professional staff.


Primary responsibilities include:
•  Respond to routine advising questions and refer students to the appropriate RC, LSA, or campus resources when additional assistance is needed.
•  Help students understand RC, LSA, major, minor, and degree requirements and support course planning and curricular navigation.
•  Provide general academic information and support to current RC students.
•  Process or assist with declarations, academic exceptions, permissions, and course overrides in accordance with established procedures.
•  Maintain accurate advising documentation and handle student information with discretion and confidentiality.
•  Research and update Academic Services resources, forms, and departmental website information.
•  Support advising fairs, orientation activities, workshops, and other Academic Services programs as assigned.
•  Participate in staff meetings, training, supervision, and professional development sessions throughout the year.
•  Complete related administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.

 

Educational Value

The intern will gain supervised, practical experience in academic advising and student services, including RC and LSA curricula, degree requirements, academic policies, advising and referral practices, student records processes, and university systems. Through training, regular supervision, and direct work with students, the intern will strengthen communication, problem-solving, documentation, relationship-building, and decision-making skills while serving diverse populations in an academic setting.

Job Requirements

•  Current University of Michigan graduate student; enrollment in higher education, student affairs, education, social work, counseling, or a related field is preferred.
•  Demonstrated interest or experience in academic advising, student support, mentoring, student affairs, or higher education.
•  Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and customer-service skills.
•  Ability to learn, interpret, and accurately communicate academic policies, procedures, and degree requirements, and to recognize when referral to professional staff is appropriate.
•  Strong organizational, research, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with close attention to detail.
•  Professional judgment and the ability to maintain the confidentiality of student information.
•  Dependability, initiative, adaptability, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
•  Comfort using standard office and online collaboration tools and the ability to learn university systems and processes.
•  Ability to work 12 hours per week in person in 1813 East Quad on a consistent schedule during the 2026-2027 academic year and to attend required meetings and training.
•  Must remain eligible for University student employment and in good academic standing throughout the appointment.
