The Robert H. Bartlett Extracorporeal Life Support Laboratory in the Department of Surgery at The University of Michigan (UM) is seeking highly motivated undergraduate engineers/scientists to join our artificial lung research and development team. Active R&D projects in our lab include: 1) microfluidic artificial lugs that closely mimic the natural lung; 2) a wearable artificial lung system for patients with end stage lung disease the automatically responds to the patient's needs; 3) smart life support control systems; and, 4) in vitro testing of artificial lungs and artificial lung systems. The ideal candidate should have interest or experience in one or more of the targeted focus areas (microfluidics, biomaterials, 3D printing, biomedical engineering, artificial lungs, CAD, CFD, electrical/computer engineering, control systems) and be working toward a degree in engineering, biology, chemistry, or a related scientific field. The ideal candidate should exhibit creativity, initiative, and the ability to thrive in a team-based research environment. Applicants must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and be an effective team member. Exact tasks and responsibilities depend on the specific subproject but include: fabrication of experimental microfluidic devices; testing of experimental devices using saline or blood; assisting with the development of smart artificial lung control systems (coding, sensors, circuitry); structural and fluidic design of devices; application of coatings to devices to improve device properties; operation of common laboratory instruments (balances, ovens, hot plates, spinner, laser engraver, blood analyzer, flow/pressure sensor, multimeters); maintenance and upkeep of laboratory equipment; collection and analysis of data; documentation of procedures; basic computer programming; ordering supplies and general maintenance of lab and supplies; other areas as needed |
