Support Services Graduate Student Lead

About Spectrum Center: Spectrum Center is a campus resource center dedicated to serving and supporting the University of Michigan community, with a focus on gender and sexuality. Founded in 1971, Spectrum Center is the first campus-based center of its kind. Through campus-wide education, research, and community building, the center staff work to enhance campus climate, increase belonging, and help students thrive. We serve and support members of the U-M's LGBTQIA2S+ communities and strive to create a campus where people of all sexualities and genders are welcome, included, and valued.

 

About the Position: The Support Services Graduate Student Lead will assist the Support Services and Wellness Advocate in leading the implementation and evaluation of the Spectrum Center student cohort support program FreshSpectives, a social cohort for first-year and transfer students. Additionally, the Support Services Lead will be responsible for assessing community-building and support services needs on campus through communication and appropriate assessment and engagement with students. The Support Services Lead is responsible for determining what events and programming will best fit the needs of the community, reflect the overall campus climate, and work to improve student satisfaction.

 

Job Summary/Responsibilities
FreshSpectives Program Leadership (40%)

? Work with the Support Services and Wellness Advocate to coordinate marketing and outreach specific to assigned program and direct the ongoing recruitment of cohort participants 

? Organize logistical details in regard to meetings and events including meeting location, meeting times and dates, and accessibility 

? Facilitate all meetings/events associated with the assigned support cohort. 

  • Work with professional staff in the development of specific trainings and engage the cohort through programming events/workshops and departmental collaboration according to students’ interest 

? Provide consistent communication between program participants and staff 

? Assess the effectiveness of the program implementation and adjust programming accordingly 

 

Event and Initiative Development (20%)

?  Organize logistical details in regard to community-wide events including, such as, meeting location, meeting times and dates, and accessibility 

? Facilitate community-wide events and initiatives, meeting pre-determined needs in a respectful and intersectional fashion.

  • Connect with community partnerships and resources as needed and/or necessary for event facilitation.

? Work with Support Services Wellness Advocate and the Communications Specialist to develop marketing materials and execute outreach strategies with consultation from for implementation.

? Assess meeting efficacy, including expected/actual attendance, community benefit and enjoyment

 

All Staff Responsibilities (20%) 

? Provide front desk coverage for approximately 5-6 hours per week.

? Support Spectrum Center tabling at outreach events 2-4 times per month according to need

? Other projects as to be defined by the Support Services and Wellness Advocate once in role 

? Attend monthly all staff meetings

? Attend Spectrum Center, Student Life, and University-wide professional development opportunities

 

Supervision and Professional Development (10%)

? Receive supervision from the Support Services and Wellness Advocate (1 hr/week) 

? Attend student staff meetings (2hr per month) and Support Services Team Meetings (1hr/biweekly)

 

Community Assessment (10%)

? Establish consistent communication with members of the Spectrum Center Programming Board and Spectrum Center staff.

? Connect with other members of the campus community and maintain a current knowledge of campus issues and climate

 

Miscellaneous: While the aforementioned duties are the priority for this position, all staff members are expected to be available and willing to perform other duties necessary to the effective functioning of the Spectrum Center as a whole. 

 

 

Compensation 

Compensation is $16.00 - $21.00 per hour, place in range determined by level of experience. Work Study preferred. Work is about 10-12 hours per week, with some evenings and weekends required. This position is not GSSA/GSA or GEO eligible.

Educational Value

Educational Value: The support services and graduate student lead will get experience facilitating peer led programs for first year undergraduates and transfer students. They will gain experience developing and implementing programming that highlights campus resources and supports student wellbeing. They will interact with people from a broad range of demographics- students, staff, faculty, parents, and alumnx and confidently represent the center and deliver information regarding our centers work. They will gain experience working within a small team and a larger office, as well as with managing the logistics of programming. This position will also have the opportunity to gain knowledge and support wellbeing initiatives in topics like mental health and sexual health.

Job Requirements

? Enrolled as a graduate student for the 2026-2027 academic year 

? Team-oriented and comfortable with recruitment, event coordination, and other public speaking

? Some knowledge or desire to increase knowledge of social identities and social justice concepts, specifically around gender identity, gender expression, attractionality, and sexual orientation 

? Connection to campus involvement and/or campus life is strongly preferred

? Highly organized, self-motivated, responsible, and able to take direction and work independently
