Job Description

The Michigan Center for Infectious Disease Threats (MCIDT) is dedicated to improving local and global health through research on infectious disease threats, strengthening preparedness for emerging public health challenges, and developing the next generation of infectious disease and infection prevention professionals. The Center is seeking a creative, detail-oriented student to support science communication, outreach, and strategic communications for both MCIDT and IP Pathways, the University of Michigan's infection prevention education and workforce development program.

This position is expected to average 10–20 hours per week.

 

  • Develop engaging content highlighting research, publications, events, and accomplishments initiatives, research discoveries, educational programs, and student accomplishments
  • Draft social media posts announcing newly published manuscripts and research findings and translate complex scientific concepts into engaging, accessible content for broad audiences.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating the MCIDT and IP Pathways websites, including news stories, publications, program updates, and event information.
  • Support marketing and recruitment efforts for IP Pathways, including promoting the certificate program, internships, educational opportunities, and careers in infection prevention.
  • Develop content showcasing student experiences, internship placements, alumni achievements, faculty profiles, and host organization partnerships.
  • Assist in developing communication materials for alumni, donors, and other external stakeholders, including brochures, one-page summaries, presentations, annual reports, metrics, and stories that demonstrate the impact of MCIDT and IP Pathways.
  • Create or assist in developing graphics, infographics, flyers, and other visual materials for websites, presentations, social media, recruitment, and outreach activities.
  • Assist with planning and promoting seminars, workshops, symposiums, internship events, and other Center and IP Pathways activities.
  • Monitor website and social media engagement metrics and recommend opportunities to increase visibility and audience engagement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Educational Value

This position provides hands-on experience in science communication, strategic communications, and research administration within a multidisciplinary infectious disease research center. Students will gain experience translating cutting-edge scientific research into compelling communications for researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, students, alumni, donors, and the general public.

The student will work directly with faculty, researchers, and program leadership while developing skills in science writing, digital communications, website management, graphic design, strategic storytelling, and public health outreach. The position also offers experience supporting educational and workforce development initiatives through IP Pathways, providing exposure to program marketing, student recruitment, and development communications in an academic research environment.

 

Job Requirements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain scientific concepts to broad audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Interest in infectious diseases, public health, infection prevention, biomedical research, science communication, higher education, or nonprofit communications.
  • Experience using social media platforms for professional or organizational communication.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar graphic design software is desirable but not required.
  • Experience with website content management systems (e.g., WordPress) is a plus.
  • Photography, videography, or multimedia content creation experience is desirable.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects and deadlines.
Hourly Rate $20.00/hour to $22.00/hour
