Position Description

The Office Assistant role in Statistics provides general office support to the department. Tasks include greeting guests, collecting the mail, receiving and distributing supplies, and assisting with set up and clean up for departmental events. In their role, office assistants will have the opportunity to gain administrative office experience and familiarity with the policies, procedures, and people of the UM Statistics department.
 

Appointment & Time Commitment

Office assistants can expect to work between 5-7 hours per week. Additional hours may be possible during weeks with a high number of events. Office assistants are paid hourly at a rate of $20/hour. Preference will be given to candidates who indicate they can commit to the position for both Fall and Winter terms and who have availability on Fridays between the hours of 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
 

Responsibilities

  • Cover the front desk of the department in West Hall for guests and deliveries

  • Distribute mail, office, and kitchen supplies throughout the building

  • Arrive on time and stay for entire shift

  • Communicate promptly with staff regarding your weekly schedule

  • Other general office support as needed

 

Educational Value

In their role, office assistants will have the opportunity to gain administrative office experience, customer service skills, collaborating with a range of students, staff, and faculty, and familiarity with the policies, procedures, and people of the UM Statistics department.

Job Requirements

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student at the University of Michigan

  • Must be in good academic and social standing

  • Must comply with all local, state, and federal laws

  • Must uphold all policies and procedures as defined by the University of Michigan Standard Practice Guide and any other applicable university policies and procedures

  • Must attend and participate in all required onboarding, training, and preparation based on start date

  • Must adhere to all roles, responsibilities, and expectations for the entire duration of the appointment

  • Must maintain clear and professional communication with staff regarding these roles, responsibilities, and expectations. 

  • Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to lift and carry small packages and other items, to walk short distances, and to deliver and pick up materials.
