Job Description

Dr. Kurt Kowalski, a research wetland ecologist at the USGS Great Lakes Science Center, is looking for a Work-Study student to assist with research on wetland restoration and invasive species control.

 

The student has potential to interact with multiple federal and academic project partners as they assist with federal research.  Students can expect to participate in and learn about data management and analysis, literature review, laboratory work, and creation of outreach and communication products (presentations, publications). The student will work in a collaborative research group composed of people from early career to late career scientists.

Educational Value

This position is geared toward providing the student with exposure to wetland science, invasive species research, partnerships, and federal scientific research. It should be viewed as a learning/training opportunity, as well as a means of financial support. 

 

The student will gain skills for basic federal research principles (data integrity, accountability, and collaboration), as well as enhancing communication (verbal and written), literature review, and data organization skills. The student will build upon data analysis skills within basic software programs including Excel and RStudio.

Job Requirements

Experience with biological laboratory work, data entry and QA/QC procedures, and simple statistical methods are preferred. Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Microsoft Exchange (Teams, SharePoint) is desired. Applicants must be organized, self-motivated, and able to work 8-12 hours per week.

 

A Federal Work-Study award from the Office of Financial Aid is required.
