Department: Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) Technology Operations Location: Ann Arbor Position Type: Student Temporary / Part-Time / Internship Positions Available: Two Positions are Available Hours: 10–20 hours/week, scheduled around class schedules. Hours will be between 8 am and 8 pm DPSS Overview The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) is dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for all U-M students, faculty and staff, with an emphasis on community outreach, prevention and education” (Executive Director Eddie Washington, Jr.). Our reach spans the Ann Arbor campus, Michigan Medicine, and our Dearborn and Flint campuses. Position OverviewThe Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) Technology Operations is seeking a motivated, tech-savvy Information Technology (IT) Support Intern to join our team. Under the direction of department supervision and in collaboration with Technology Operations personnel, this role provides entry-level technical support for DPSS staff, specialized applications, and security technologies. Key ResponsibilitiesUser & Application Support: Assist DPSS staff with basic technical troubleshooting for department-specific software and Windows and Mac operating systems. Account Management: Help process routine user account setup, permissions, and basic access requests. Hardware & Systems Care: Assist with maintaining, monitoring, and setting up network printers and computers Inventory & Documentation: Help log, track, and inventory IT assets; update basic procedural documentation and user guides. Testing & Upgrades: Assist full-time IT staff in testing new software updates, operating system releases, and hardware setups before deployment. Customer Service: Provide friendly, reliable remote and in-person assistance to DPSS staff in a dynamic, safety-focused environment.
Work Schedule & Environment Training: On-the-job training and guidance will be provided to help build your skill set. Location: This position will be on-site and needs to be in-person at the Campus Safety Services Building, 1239 Kipke Dr, on the Ann Arbor campus. Position will also work at various locations on campus, including the DPSS Technology Operations office at Arbor Lakes, 4251 Plymouth Rd. This position is available for the following semesters: Fall 2026 and Winter 2027, with possible continuation into Summer 2027 and beyond
Compensation Supervision: Adam Hoskins, Associate Director, will supervise the student in this role. They will provide guidance, structure, and support while allowing the student appropriate autonomy to work independently. Supervision will include regular check-ins, project guidance, and feedback specific to the intern’s professional and personal development goals. The student will be encouraged to ask questions, reflect on learning, and develop confidence working in a professional public safety environment.

Job Requirements |
Required QualificationsStudent Status: Currently enrolled student with eligibility to work Basic Technical Familiarity: Working knowledge of Windows 10/11 and/or macOS, popular web browsers, and basic software installation/removal. Productivity Tools: Comfort using standard tools such as Google Workspace and Microsoft Office 365. Communication & Service: Strong verbal and written communication skills with a customer-first mindset. Problem-Solving & Dependability: A proactive attitude, eagerness to learn new technical systems, and strong attention to detail. Confidentiality: Demonstrated integrity and ability to maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive safety and account information. Transportation: Be able to drive a university vehicle You must pass a public safety background investigation
Desired Qualifications (Preferred, Not Required)Pursuing a degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information, or a related field. Prior experience in a customer service or basic help-desk setting. Fundamental understanding of basic network concepts (e.g., local printers, IP addresses). Interest in public safety technology, access control, or physical security systems.
