Job Description

Programming Coordinator & Research Assistant Description

The position will involve assisting with the Center's programs and research. Specifically, the role will involve helping with the planning, implementation, and administrative work related to research-related program development and research data collection and/or analysis. It will provide students with an opportunity to (1) gain team-based experience with community-engaged research activities and (2) promote transformative, K-12 education. 

 

Compensation Options

 

  • 3 course credits in fulfillment of the doctoral research assistantship (RA) requirement 

  • Potential to earn hourly pay up to $36/hour if or after RA has been met, or if RA credit is not desired

  • Possibility for renewal during 2027-28 at an hourly pay rate

CREATE Center Mission 

The CREATE Center fosters and networks equity-driven  scholars and education advocates, and activists who are committed to conducting and/or  leveraging research that helps catalyze transformative public education for children, families, and communities. We focus on the education of those highly impacted by the injustices of systemic racism and poverty. Center  affiliates are part of an action-oriented, scholarly community that advances equitable and antiracist educational practice, policy, and inquiry across four focal areas. These areas include  protecting, reinvesting in, and revitalizing public education; dismantling the school-to-prison  pipeline; forging and maintaining socially just educational partnerships; and developing public  scholarship that contributes to the public good. Center affiliates include U-M faculty, students,  and research staff, along with non-U-M scholars and community-based practitioners who are  working nationally and internationally to promote justice-driven educational change and critical  scholarship in ways that honor the voices, knowledge, assets, needs, and experiences of youth,  families, and community members.

Job Requirements

Responsibilities 

The assistant will join the CREATE Center Team consisting of the Center’s director, senior research associate, a communications & media coordinator, and intern(s). They will participate in weekly team meetings, one-on-one meetings with Center leaders, and work independently. As part of this team, the assistant will help with a variety of efforts that may include:

  • Co-planning the Center’s 2025 Youth-engaged Research Symposium and/or other CREATE Center speaker events, workshops, or social functions.

  • Preparing program information, correspondence, and marketing materials related to  Center research initiatives, activities, and events  

  • Compiling and reviewing information for research reports and grant application

  • Sourcing and reviewing research and public policy news/reports  

  • Assisting with data management, file storage systems & miscellaneous administrative needs

  • Assisting with qualitative data collection and analysis 

 

Required Qualifications  

 

 

  • Doctoral student standing (highly qualified Master’s students will also be considered)

  • Evidence of relevant professional experience  

  • Intermediate to advanced competency in Microsoft Office suite and/or database querying  tools as well as file management software (i.e., Google Drive, UMBox) 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a team-oriented work environment  

  • (Preferred) Experience assisting with project management 

  • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail  

  • Demonstrated ability to manage several tasks concurrently and set priorities in order to  meet deadlines  

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to communicate  with a large and diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and community partners 

  • Ability to protect private information and confidential material with high integrity

  • Proven self-starter and solution-oriented
