Job Description |
Unit X is a new presidential initiative launched with a $250 million investment from the University of Michigan. Unit X will accelerate biomedical innovation discovered at U-M by integrating health sciences, engineering, and advanced supercomputing. In this role, you support, drive, and analyze ongoing GPU pilot studies across campus. You will bridge technical workflows and executive strategy by tracking compute usage, building automation tools, and leveraging artificial intelligence to generate actionable business insights. We offer a flexible work schedule of 10-12 hours per week Monday through Friday during regular business hours. On site work (in NCRC B18) will be preferred with occasional remote work possible. Educational Value |
Reporting to the Strategy Analyst and working with key institutional partners—such as the Advanced Research Computing (ARC) group at the University of Michigan, and faculty researchers—you will gain hands-on experience in the following areas: - GPU Pilot & Metrics Tracking: Collecting, analyzing, and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics for both internal on-premises GPU clusters and cloud GPU usage. - Interactive Dashboards & App Building: Designing and managing interactive Airtable apps and forms for researchers to input key metric data, and creating intuitive dashboards to visualize trends. - Workflow & Process Automation: Automating metric tracking workflows and data collection pipelines using Python, SQL, and Airtable integrations. - Predictive Modeling & AI Decision Support: Applying AI models to metric tracking data to help the Unit X team form executive recommendations and business decisions. - AI Agent & Chatbot Development: Setting up and deploying specialized AI agents for automated tasks (such as data collection and triaging), synthesizing website communication data into digestible summaries, and creating tailored AI chatbots for diverse campus end-users (researchers, students, staff). |

Job Requirements |
We are looking for an energetic graduate student (MS/PhD) in Information Sciences/Technology, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related technical field with: Technical & Programming Skills: - Programming & Scripting Languages: Proficiency in Python (for scripting, data manipulation, and automation) and SQL (for data querying). Exposure to Bash/Shell scripting (for cluster/server automation) or JavaScript/TypeScript (for backend/API integrations) is a strong plus.
- AI Coding Assistants & Agentic Tools: Hands-on experience or familiarity using advanced AI developer tools like Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor to accelerate code writing, debugging, and terminal-based task execution.
- Airtable & Productivity Tools: Proficient in building low-code apps, custom forms, and automated triggers in Airtable, as well as full proficiency with Google Suite (Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms, Calendar) for seamless collaboration.
- Data Analytics & Visualization: Ability to build interactive dashboards, clean data, compile key performance metrics, and extract actionable insights.
AI/ML & Agent Builder Concepts: Candidates should have a strong foundational understanding of building AI agents and workflows, specifically: - Agentic Frameworks & Architectures: Familiarity with frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, AutoGen, CrewAI, or OpenAI Assistants API.
LLM & Prompt Engineering: Understanding of prompt design, system prompts, and context-window optimization. Tool Use & Function Calling: Understanding how AI agents call external APIs, query databases, and interact with web forms or custom scripts. (Desired) Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): Knowledge of vector databases, embeddings, and RAG architectures to build specialized chatbots that ingest campus website data/documentation. (Desired) Automated Data Triaging & Parsing: Experience setting up LLM pipelines to summarize web content, parse unstructured feedback, and automatically categorize or route incoming support requests/metrics.
General Skills: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills to explain technical data to strategy and leadership teams. Ability to work independently, manage project priorities, and follow through on task automation. High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
