Graduate Intern — Student Experience & Community Engagement

Job Description

The Graduate Intern for Student Experience & Community Engagement is a member of IGR's Student Experience Team (SET), which cultivates meaningful, connected, and sustained student engagement within the Program on Intergroup Relations. Working collaboratively with IGR staff and a team of undergraduate student colleagues, the Graduate Intern will help develop and assess experiences that foster belonging, community, leadership, and continued engagement with IGR.

The Graduate Intern will provide leadership to SET, supervise and mentor undergraduate student staff, support annual community traditions, gather and respond to student feedback, and contribute to the development of a holistic student experience across the IGR student lifecycle.

IGR is currently looking to hire two graduate students to support the Student Experience Team. The two Graduate Interns will work collaboratively as members of the Student Experience Team. While each intern will take primary responsibility for specific areas, both interns will contribute to shared SET priorities and support one another across portfolios. Together, the Graduate Interns will help lead the student staff team, contribute to strategic planning and assessment, support major IGR events, and cultivate a student experience grounded in belonging, learning, social justice, and shared responsibility.

Educational Value

Value added

The Graduate Interns will have the opportunity to:

  • Bridge theory to practice. Apply concepts, frameworks, and skills from their graduate programs to real-world challenges related to student engagement, community building, partnerships, leadership development, and social justice education.

  • Develop a holistic approach to student well-being. Learn to understand students as whole people and consider the academic, social, emotional, relational, and developmental dimensions of the student experience when designing programs, relationships, and interventions.

  • Learn and practice social justice praxis. Engage in the ongoing cycle of reflection, action, assessment, and revision that characterizes social justice praxis. Interns will have opportunities to examine how theory, institutional structures, relationships, and lived experiences intersect—and to use that learning to inform their practice.

  • Develop as reflective practitioners. Use supervision, dialogue, assessment, and intentional reflection to examine their own identities, assumptions, approaches, and impact as educators and practitioners.

  • Experiment and innovate. Have space to test new ideas, take thoughtful risks, learn from what does and does not work, and adapt their practice based on student feedback and experience.

  • Practice relationship-centered leadership. Develop skills in mentoring, supervision, collaboration, partnership-building, conflict engagement, and community development while learning how relationships serve as a foundation for meaningful student engagement.

  • Contribute to work centered on human decency. Participate in an educational environment that values dignity, care, curiosity, compassion, accountability, and the belief that how we treat one another matters. Interns will have the opportunity to explore what it means to build student experiences and institutional practices that center the humanity of students, colleagues, partners, and communities.
