Job Description

Michigan Sea Grant is seeking a creative, engaged student to join our communications team as a part-time Social Media Intern. The intern will report directly to the Communications Editor and collaborate closely with other Michigan Sea Grant staff members. The ideal candidate is a skilled communicator comfortable with current social media platforms and trends.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the communications team to create and post Instagram image carousels and Instagram/Facebook reels on behalf of Michigan Sea Grant.

  • Curate and repost content across social platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, and LinkedIn. 

  • Use video editing skills to produce engaging Instagram reels and other video content.

  • As available, provide coverage and create real-time social media content for local Michigan Sea Grant events. 

  • Assess Michigan Sea Grant’s social media analytics to find patterns in popular posts.

  • Create a list of frequent social media engagers and taggers (individuals and institutions).

  • Track trending creators in the natural resources, Great Lakes, fishing, and science communication spaces.

Educational Value

This position offers hands-on experience in non-profit marketing, supporting social media, photography, video, analytics, and digital communications for a federally funded nonprofit.

Job Requirements

Required qualifications

  • Current UM-Ann Arbor student pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

  • Able to commit 10-15 hours per week with a relatively consistent weekly schedule.

  • Prior experience in social media, photo, video, or communications.

  • Strong writing and verbal skills.

  • Collaborative, positive, and energetic attitude.

  • Able to work independently and receive constructive feedback.

  • Proficient in social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

  • Able to organize and coordinate multiple tasks with close attention to detail.

  • Able to work independently as well as collaboratively with multiple team members. 

  • Exceptional communication skills in English, both oral and written. 

Desired qualifications

  • Has photography and/or video editing experience.

  • Has experience with producing Instagram Reels and basic video editing.

  • Familiar with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere).

  • Familiar with social media platforms and analytics tools.

  • Has strong interest in sustainability and the environment.

Hourly Rate $15.00/hour
Hours 10.0 to 15.0 hours per week
