Job Description

Position Summary

The Summer Business Academy (SBA) Counselors provide residential and student support to rising high school seniors participating in the Michigan Ross Summer Business Academy. Counselors serve as a resource to participants during the hours outside of the classroom, including evening activities, student check-ins, and residence hall support. 

 

Counselors live on campus in the residence halls for the duration of the program and help create a safe, welcoming, and engaging residential experience for participants. Each Counselor will have a grouping of about 10 students per program cohort they will be responsible for. This position will take place for a portion of June and potentially July.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Student Support & Engagement

  • Serve as a resource and point of contact for participants.

  • Build positive, professional relationships with students.

  • Support students as they navigate the residential program experience.

  • Encourage participation in evening activities and programming.

  • Identify and escalate student concerns as needed.

 

Residential Life & Supervision

  • Live in the SBA residence halls for the duration of the program.

  • Conduct student check-ins and monitor student whereabouts.

  • Support residence hall activities and evening programming.

  • Reinforce curfew, conduct, and residence hall expectations.

  • Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive residential environment.

  • Respond appropriately to student concerns and behavioral issues.

  • Escalate safety, conduct, or other significant concerns to the Lead Residence Advisor or SBA staff.

 

Program Operations & Communication

 

 

  • Communicate regularly with the Lead Residence Advisor and SBA staff.

  • Participate in staff training, meetings, and program orientations.

  • Follow SBA safety, conduct, and emergency procedures.

  • Document and report incidents as required.

  • Assist with residential logistics and other program needs.

Schedule & Time Commitment

This is a live-in residential position on the UM Ann Arbor campus. Counselors are expected to reside in the assigned SBA residence halls for the full duration of the program.

 

Primary responsibilities occur after the classroom portion of the program day and include evening activities, student check-ins, residence hall supervision, and residential programming. Counselors will also participate in required staff training, meetings, and orientations.

 

This position will require approximately 40 hours of work responsibility Sunday through Friday, potentially for 3-6 weeks depending on the structure of the program. A typical weekday schedule would begin at around 4:30pm and last until about 10:30pm.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student.

  • Ability to live on campus for the full duration of the program(s).

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Reliable, responsible, and comfortable working in a residential environment.

  • Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.

  • Sound judgment and ability to respond calmly to student concerns.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a Resident Advisor, mentor, counselor, camp staff member, or student leader.

  • Experience working with high school students or youth programs.

  • Experience in a residential campus environment.

Hourly Rate $16.00/hour
