Job Description

Position Summary

The Summer Business Academy (SBA) Lead Residence Advisor provides leadership and oversight for the residential and after-hours participant experience. The Lead RA serves as the primary point of contact for SBA Counselors and the first point of escalation for student, residential, and after-hours concerns.

 

The Lead RA lives on campus in the residence halls for the duration of the program and works closely with Counselors and SBA program staff to ensure students have a safe, supportive, and engaging residential experience. The Lead RA will supervise a team of 6 Counselors per program. This position will take place for a portion of June and potentially July.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Residential Leadership & Supervision

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for SBA Counselors during after-hours programming.

  • Provide guidance, support, and oversight to the Counselor team.

  • Monitor residential operations, student check-ins, and evening activities.

  • Ensure Counselors fulfill required student programming and supervision responsibilities.

  • Participate in and supervise evening activities and residential programming.

  • Reinforce SBA expectations, curfews, and safety and conduct policies.

  • Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive residential environment.

 

Student Support & Escalation

  • Serve as the primary after-hours contact for student concerns and issues.

  • Support Counselors in responding to student questions, concerns, and behavioral issues.

  • Assess situations and determine when additional support or intervention is needed.

  • Escalate significant behavioral, safety, medical, or program concerns to the SBA Program Manager.

  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with participants.

 

Program Operations & Communication

  • Maintain regular communication with the SBA Program Manager regarding residential operations and student concerns.

  • Communicate relevant updates and expectations to Counselors.

  • Support daily transitions between classroom and residential programming.

  • Participate in staff training, meetings, orientations, and program debriefs.

  • Document and report significant incidents in accordance with SBA procedures.

  • Assist with residential logistics and other program needs as assigned.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Current graduate student or student enrolled in a professional graduate program.

  • Experience working with high school students or youth programs.

  • Experience in residence life, student programming, camps, orientation programs, or a similar setting.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to live on campus for the full duration of the program.

  • Strong judgment and ability to respond calmly to unexpected situations.

  • Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.

  • Reliable, organized, and comfortable providing after-hours leadership and support.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

 

  • Graduate student in higher education, student affairs, education, business, or a related field.

  • MBA student or graduate student with experience in business education.

  • Previous experience as a Resident Advisor, Lead Counselor, Residence Life staff member, or similar role.

  • Experience supervising or coordinating student staff.

  • Experience working in a residential youth or pre-college program.

  • First aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain certification.

  • Familiarity with University of Michigan campus resources and policies.

Schedule & Time Commitment

This is a live-in residential position. The Lead Residence Advisor is expected to reside in the assigned SBA residence halls for the full duration of the program.

Primary responsibilities occur after the classroom portion of the program day and include overseeing evening programming, supporting Counselors, monitoring residential operations, and serving as the primary after-hours contact. The Lead RA will also participate in required staff training, meetings, orientations, and other program activities.

This position will require approximately 40 hours of work responsibility Sunday through Friday, potentially for 3-6 weeks depending on the structure of the program. A typical weekday schedule would begin at around 4:30pm and last until about 10:30pm.
