Job Description

Position Summary

The Summer Business Academy (SBA) Course Assistant supports faculty and student participants throughout the academic portion of the program day. Course Assistants serve as the academic counterpart to the SBA Counselor, providing classroom support while helping maintain a safe, engaged, and supportive learning environment for rising high school seniors.

 

Course Assistants (CA) work closely with instructors to support classroom activities, breakout sessions, student projects, attendance, and participant supervision throughout the academic day. CAs will work in pairs of two to support a cohort of students during the daytime programming. This position will take place for a portion of June and potentially July.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Classroom & Academic Support

  • Support instructors with classroom activities and daily instruction.

  • Assist with breakout activities, group work, and student projects.

  • Provide students with academic and logistical support during class.

  • Help instructors maintain an engaging and organized classroom environment.

  • Support classroom transitions and daily academic logistics.

  • Identify student questions or concerns and connect them with the appropriate instructor or SBA staff.

 

Student Supervision & Engagement

  • Monitor student attendance and whereabouts throughout the academic day.

  • Support required student check-ins and transitions between program activities.

  • Attend scheduled student lunches in the dining halls.

  • Build positive, professional relationships with participants.

  • Help promote student engagement and participation throughout the program.

  • Reinforce SBA expectations and student conduct policies.

 

Program Operations & Communication

 

 

  • Communicate regularly with instructors and the SBA Program Manager.

  • Share relevant student concerns, attendance issues, or participation concerns with program staff.

  • Participate in required staff training, meetings, and orientations.

  • Follow SBA safety, conduct, and supervision procedures.

  • Assist with other academic or program needs as assigned.

Schedule & Time Commitment

This position primarily supports the academic portion of the SBA program day and requires attendance throughout scheduled classroom, lunch, and student programming activities.

 

Housing is not provided for this position. Course Assistants must live within reasonable commuting distance of campus or otherwise have reliable transportation to and from the program for the duration of their assignment.

 

Course Assistants will also participate in required staff training, meetings, orientations, and other scheduled program activities.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student.

  • Ability to commute to campus for the duration of the program.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Reliable, organized, and comfortable working with high school students.

  • Ability to support students in a classroom and program environment.

  • Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.

  • Strong judgment and attention to student safety and engagement.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Michigan Ross Course Assistant (CA) supporting the Office of Undergraduate Programs (OUP).

  • Experience working with high school students or youth programs.

  • Previous teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or classroom support experience.

  • Familiarity with Michigan Ross courses, classrooms, and academic resources.

  • Experience supporting group activities or project-based learning.
