Job Description

The GRIP Lab is a mathematics-education research lab at the University of Michigan is updating the organization of its physical library and connecting it to a database. We are looking for a reliable, detail-oriented student to help in that effort. Over the past several years, the lab has built a library organized around various collections. Locations need to be updated on an existing database, and a substantial number of new books need to be sorted into those collections,  physically labeled, and cataloged in a searchable database so that researchers can easily find what they need. You will sort and categorize materials, apply consistent labels, and create accurate database records. Training in our labeling scheme and database will be provided. No prior library or cataloging experience is required but resourcefulness and capacity to solve problems independently is important. This is quiet, independent, behind-the-scenes work — not a public service desk. If you enjoy bringing order to things, like steady hands-on work, and take satisfaction in a well-organized system, please apply! The student may continue working into the winter semester by mutual agreement. Hours are flexible and scheduled around your courses.

Responsibilities:

  • Sort and organize a collection of books and materials by subject, author, or other agreed-upon categories.

  • Apply physical labels / call numbers to each item following a consistent scheme.

  • Enter and verify records in a database (title, author, subject, location, and other fields), keeping entries accurate and consistent.

  • Flag duplicates, damaged items, or anything that needs a decision from the supervisor.

  • Help maintain the organizational system as new materials arrive.

  • Keep simple progress notes so the work can be picked up where you left off.

Educational Value
  • Gain experience working in a high-profile U-M lab, impacting long-term organizational goals
  • Practice organizational and detail-oriented skills
  • Gain experience with real-world data entry
Job Requirements

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled U-M undergraduate eligible for Federal Work-Study (please confirm your work-study award when applying).

  • Strong attention to detail and consistency — labels and records must match.

  • Comfort with basic computer tools (spreadsheets and/or database entry), and willingness to learn our system.

  • Dependable, on time, and communicative with lab staff, both in person and in writing.

  • Able to work independently and stay organized once trained.

  • Able to do light physical work: lifting and shelving boxes and books, standing, and reaching.

Desired qualifications:

  • Previous organizing, cataloging, or data-entry experience is a plus.

  • Interest in education, mathematics, or research is a plus.
