Job Description

The College of Engineering’s Communications and Marketing team (C&M) is hiring a multimedia accessibility assistant to help ensure our team’s video and audio content is more accessible.

The student will assess videos for meaningful visual information, write and time audio description scripts, create WebVTT files, publish accessible video versions in MiVideo, add links between original and accessible versions, and review or correct closed captions.

The position combines writing, multimedia production, quality assurance, and digital-content management. Training will be provided in audio description, captioning, WCAG principles, and U-M publishing tools.

This position reports to the Multimedia Manager and will be part of an award-winning marketing and communications team.

Educational Value

Direct experience in digital accessibility, multimedia production, and inclusive communication. Strengthen professional writing and editorial skills by translating visual and technical information into concise audio descriptions; learn captioning, WebVTT, MiVideo, and YouTube workflows; and develop experience in quality assurance, project tracking, and accessible content publishing. The role also offers some exposure to engineering research communication and the responsible use of AI-assisted media tools.

Job Requirements

Some experience working with video in an editing platform, such as Adobe Premiere Pro or similar. Strong command of written English, including grammar, punctuation, and concise descriptive writing. Ability to review and accurately describe visual and technical information. Familiarity with closed captions, transcripts, or other multimedia accessibility features. Ability to work with web-based content-management and video-hosting systems.
