Job Description

The University of Michigan Library's Shapiro Design Lab (SDL) seeks a graduate student Program Assistant to help direct this ever-evolving experimental space founded on peer learning, engaged learning, and interdisciplinarity. The Program Assistant will support the day-to-day operation of the Design Lab Workshop, the SDL’s makerspace. They will also participate in discussions,  planning, and updates of other Shapiro Design Lab spaces. Our principles guide the work of the SDL. 

 

The duties of this position will be completed in-person at the Shapiro Design Lab, housed on the first floor of the Shapiro Undergraduate Library, with some possibility for remote work. 

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

In conjunction with the Design Lab Manager, the Program Assistant will:

  • Coordinate and manage the Design Lab's student Interns, including training and scheduling staff meetings

  • Provide and facilitate consultations with users on project questions, design issues, and additional assistance with Design Lab resources. 

  • Maintain makerspace equipment including 3D printers, laser cutter, digital die cutter, sewing machine, and additional tools, providing regular maintenance, troubleshooting, minor repairs, and coordination with SDL manager for escalated machine issues.

  • Advise on the installation, configuration, and modification of equipment and associated software

  • May develop and provide hands-on experiential learning workshops on related technologies

  • Perform related duties based on departmental need

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Current graduate student at the University of Michigan

  • Core technical expertise in 3d printing and laser cutting is essential, and expertise in other makerspace tools like graphics printing, textiles and sewing, electronics and microcontrollers, 3d scanning, and low-fidelity prototyping are preferred. 

  • Dependability, accountability, and availability for around 20 hours / week 

  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently

  • Capability for initiating projects and leadership

  • Ability to respond to changing needs within the Lab, given its exploratory and experimental character

  • Interest in collaborating with individuals from a diversity of backgrounds, cultures, and viewpoints
