Job Description

Marketing and Media Student Assistant at the Bentley Historical Library

We are seeking a student to assist with social media work showcasing the Bentley Historical Library, focusing on the proposal, creation, and analysis of short-form video content for social media. 

 

The Bentley Historical Library collects the materials for and promotes the study of the histories of two great, intertwined institutions, the State of Michigan and the University of Michigan. 

The Bentley’s 11,000 research collections range from the papers of governors of Michigan to the records of student and faculty life at the University, to the entire historical record of intercollegiate athletics at Michigan, and much more. The historic Detroit Observatory, located on the University of Michigan’s central campus, is a division of the Bentley Historical Library.

Position Responsibilities

The responsibilities and specific job functions below are what are anticipated for this position.

  • Proposing social media ideas in a weekly pitch meeting with your communications mentor

  • Scripting, filming, and editing short-form video content 

  • Starring in some of this video content to showcase the Bentley Historical Library

  • Evaluating video performance and recommending improvements based on engagement data

Compensation: $15.00/hour (undergrad) / $17.00/hour (graduate)

 
Educational Value

This job will provide a student with hands-on experience working on video production, social media, communications, creative planning and storytelling, and analytics at one of U-M’s historical libraries. 

 
Job Requirements
  • Experience creating short-form video content

  • Familiarity with Instagram Reels and current social media trends

  • Familiarity with either Canva video editing software or Adobe video editing software

  • Interest in history and archives, and demonstrated storytelling/communication abilities

  • Current U-M Ann Arbor student 

  • Able to commit 5-10 hours per week with a relatively consistent weekly schedule 

  • Collaborative, positive attitude 

 

Hourly Rate $15.00/hour to $17.00/hour
Hours 5.0 to 10.0 hours per week
