Job Description

The Department of Statistics is seeking applicants for the position of Instructional Aide. STATS 250 meets twice weekly for 80-minute lectures. Instructional assistants attend the last 30 minutes of lecture meetings to assist with small group work activities that enrolled students complete in groups of 3-4 individuals. IAs are managed by a lead GSI, who reviews solutions and common student misconceptions with IAs outside for 10-15 minutes just before entering the lecture hall. When inside, IAs circulate the lecture hall, assisting groups of students by answering their questions, checking their work, and probing their thinking. Later in the week, a random subset of exercises from the group work are graded by IAs via Gradescope using rubrics created by the instructional team. This grading is typically completed asynchronously, such that IAs can flexibly schedule their grading work around their other obligations, so long as all submissions are evaluated by the deadline established by the instructional team.

To apply, email resume and cover letter to eromero@umich.edu.

Educational Value

Students will develop communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills by working with undergraduate students in small-group settings. They will strengthen their understanding of statistical concepts by helping students work through exercises, answering questions, and identifying common misconceptions. Instructional assistants will also gain experience evaluating student work using established grading rubrics, providing consistent and accurate feedback, and collaborating with the instructional team. This position offers valuable experience in peer instruction, teamwork, and time management while allowing students to build confidence in explaining technical concepts.
