Job Description

Graduate and undergraduate students will provide support for the Summer Youth Employment Program, a summer jobs program employing youth aged 16-24 in Washtenaw County. In partnership with the Washtenaw County Office of Economic Development, MichiganWorks! Southeast, and other community and campus partners, Poverty Solutions and the Ginsberg Center facilitate a summer job experience for youth on the U-M campus. Youth Success Coaches will be responsible for assisting with the implementation and coordination of the SYEP, including offering close support to both youth participants and employers.

Success coaches will need to be organized, team-oriented, personable, adaptable to challenges, and willing to learn.


Main responsibilities include:


Coordination of SYEP Program: On-Boarding, Training & Activities

In close collaboration and communication with Washtenaw County partner organizations, coordinate and assist with all programmatic training, events and activities including:

·         Employer Orientation and Training - designed to prepare employers for working with youth

·         Youth Orientation and Soft Skills Training - designed to prepare youth for employment and provide professional job skills throughout the summer

·         Interview Day - designed to match employers with youth employees

·         U-M hiring process -  providing assistance in compiling and submitting key documentation for employment and assisting with all first day of work HR activities

·         Mid- and End-of-Program Celebrations - designed to provide networking opportunities and recognize youth accomplishments with their families

Youth Support

·         Assist youth with navigating job-related responsibilities (e.g., transportation to campus, attaining proper work attire, communicating with supervisors)

·         Conduct one-on-one check-ins

·         Facilitate and prepare materials for weekly enrichment workshop sessions

·         Provide ongoing support and mentorship, especially if potential barriers to success emerge during the summer

·         Serve as a contact person for any questions that may arise in navigating  the university and refer youth to campus resources as necessary

·         Assist with research related tasks as needed, including consent and survey collection activities

Employer Support

·         Develop weekly informational newsletters with reminders, updates, and information

·         Conduct one-on-one check-ins

·         Provide ongoing support of employer-youth relationship including youth development, mentorship, and navigating challenges

·         Serve as liaison to U-M Human Resources for hiring and payroll


·         Collect programmatic feedback from both youth and employers

·         Respond to phone/email inquiries about SYEP

Assist Poverty Solutions staff as needed
