Job Description

994 Program Assistant - Summer Only

The English Language Institute is recruiting undergraduate students for paid consulting positions in an GSI teacher preparation course for graduate students who speak English as an additional language.

What will you do??

  • Participate in practice office hours and teaching sessions, as you would for a regular class 

  • Give feedback to prospective GSIs on the quality of their instruction in terms of language use and lesson delivery

  • Get paid to act like yourselves - students in a U-M class!

What qualifications do you need?

  • Enrollment as an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan

  • Experience in LSA undergraduate courses

  • Excellent time management skills

  • Ability to offer clear, concise feedback in both written and oral form

  • Availability for all of the following dates/times

 

REQUIRED DATES

Orientation Session: Tuesday, July 15 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

Practice Teaching Sessions

  • Monday July 21   9:00am - 12:00pm and 1:00pm - 4:00pm
  • Thursday July 24   9:00am - 12:00pm and 1:00pm - 4:00pm
  • Tuesday July 29   9:00am - 12:00pm and 1:00pm - 4:00pm
  • Thursday July 31  9:00am - 12:00pm and 1:00pm - 4:00pm
  • Monday August 4  1:00pm - 4:00pm

      Job Requirements

      Ideal Candidates will:

      • be currently enrolled as a U-M undergraduate

      • have experience in LSA undergraduate courses (especially Chemistry, Physics, Math, Statistics, and EEB)

      • have an interest in quality teaching

      • be available for all training and practice teaching sessions

      • be punctual

      • have excellent English written and oral communication skills

      Note: Having some experience studying or traveling abroad is helpful but not required.

      Preference will be given to candidates who are available to work during all practice teaching sessions, to candidates with prior successful performance in ELI 994 or other ELI courses, to candidates with evident motivation to participate constructively in the practice teaching sessions, to candidates who contribute to a diverse array of academic backgrounds (particularly quantitative and/or science majors), to candidates with international experience, and to candidates with prior teaching or tutoring experience.

      Educational Value

      Program assistants will enhance their intercultural communication skills and their ability to offer constructive feedback and to interact in a multilingual environment. Program assistants will also learn how graduate students from a variety of non-English speaking countries teach various academic subjects in English.
