Job Description

Job Description:  

The program assistant position serves as Academic Success Partners (ASPs) to provide peer-to-peer support for holistic success of sophomore scholars participating in OAMI’s SuccessConnects program. This includes success coaching, assistance with event planning, MLK symposium, SC Kickoff, communications, special projects, and resource connections/utilization. ASPs work closely as a team to accommodate the needs of a community of scholars with a wide range of backgrounds and identities and to provide guiding insight and valuable perspective for successful navigation of the collegiate landscape. Through individualized coaching and development of activities and resources, ASPs focus on assisting scholars to meet their academic, personal, and social goals for success. This includes the execution of responsibilities that include the following:

  • Participate and attend in person the ASP mandatory training on Tuesday, August 19 through Friday, August 22, 2025 (Four-day training is required)

  • Help out with MLK symposium, SC Kickoff, ASP event, and ASP subcommittees

  • Lead an ASP workshop by bringing in an on-campus resource (i.e., Spectrum, COE, CAPS, etc) during an ASP meeting

  • Use the ASP curriculum for all scholar meetings 

  • Coordinate opportunities to build community and a supportive network of scholars.

  • Coordinate collaborations with campus resources that support student success.

  • Maintain database on student participation. 

  • Attendance at weekly staff meetings on Fridays from 3 pm-5 pm is required.

  • Participation in other OAMI programming as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Length of Appointment: Fall Term 2025 - Winter Term 2026: 8/19/25 - 5/1/26

Work Schedule:

Approximately 10 hours per week; including some evenings and weekends. During the school year, mandatory hours include Fridays from 3-5 PM for weekly ASP staff meetings, helping out with the MLK Symposium, and SC Kickoff. A required summer training will be held in-person on campus from August 19th-22nd.

Required Qualifications:

  • Achieved junior or senior level status by the beginning of the Fall Term of 2025

  • Enrolled at U-M for at least two terms. 

  • 3.0 cumulative GPA/or higher and for the most recent semester. 

  • Demonstrated strong communication skills with supervisor via in-person, email, and follow-up.

  • Experience mentoring undergraduate students and/or demonstrated leadership experience in campus and/or community organizations. 

  • Enthusiasm for mentoring students. 

  • Strong organizational, verbal, written, and technological skills and demonstrated ability to follow-through on tasks and assignments. 

  • Exhibit responsibility, reliability, and maturity. 

  • Able to balance academic and work requirements. 

  • Proven dedication to fostering student success, with experience supporting students from a wide range of backgrounds and identities.

  • Possess functional knowledge of University of Michigan departments, programs, and resources.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to function independently as well as contribute positively to teamwork. 

  • Available to attend/work:

    • Weekly staff meetings on Fridays from 3 pm-5 pm. Meetings will be in person in.

    • In-person training from 8/19/25 - 8/22/25.

    • MLK Symposium January 19, 2026

    • The SuccessConnects Kickoff Welcome Event in late August or early September (exact date TBD)
