Job Description

The Program on Intergroup Relations is seeking a creative and motivated graduate student to be our communications student coordinator and support our communications portfolio, with key responsibilities related to storytelling and coordinating our IGR Voice newsletter. This role reports to the communications strategist and is ideal for a graduate student with a strong passion for storytelling who is looking to contribute to IGR’s mission of fostering dialogue and understanding across diverse communities.

 

 

Project management and content development (70%):

  • Under the direction of the communications strategist, lead key storytelling initiatives highlighting IGR’s students, staff, and alumnx.

  • Connect and work closely with the IGR team to brainstorm, plan, and execute content projects from inception to completion.

  • Write and edit feature stories, articles, and other narrative-driven content, maintaining a clear and creative writing style that reflects the program’s goals of dialogue and understanding.

  • Conduct research and interviews for quotes or background as needed

  • Coordinate with staff on related needs, such as purchasing, interview sourcing, event details, supporting media (photo, design), etc.

  • Maintain a keen awareness of current events, political contexts, and social trends to ensure content remains relevant, sensitive, and engaging.

  • Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of communication projects, providing recommendations for improvements.

 

Newsletter coordination and engagement (30%):

  • Coordinate and produce the IGR’s bi-weekly newsletter, IGR Voice, ensuring timely delivery and high-quality content that engages and informs the community.

  • Curate content for the newsletter, including storytelling pieces, program updates, and event highlights, in alignment with the program’s overarching themes.

  • Engage with contributors and stakeholders to gather content and feedback, fostering collaboration and ensuring diverse perspectives are represented.

  • Support distributing timely IGR content to partners’ newsletters

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicant must be a University of Michigan graduate student for 2025-2026, with exceptional writing and critical thinking skills

  • Excellent judgment and awareness of sociopolitical nuances, audience expectations, and key communication strategies.

  • Self-motivated, with strong organizational and communication skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks independently.

  • Strong attention to detail, awareness of best practices, and a proficiency in drafting, editing, and proofing.

  • Proven ability to handle several projects at once and meet deadlines. 

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience summarizing content for social media

  • Experience with the Drupal content management system

Educational Value

Students will gain direct experience and knowledge in an array of practical communications and writing projects for a real client. Learning outcomes include skill-building in writing for multiple mediums and formats, content strategy, and communications and marketing project management.
